Reworked Paintings 3

Little Diomede Island (1985-2005)
I long felt that this image of a newly emerging volcanic island lacked suitable drama, so after twenty years I added the fiery lava flows and the spotted pink beach and glowing cloud above the summit.

Reworked paintings 4.

Recently I reworked two of the earliest paintings from my New York period, to add color and greater definition to the elements in the composition.

Incident on Rte 140

Incident on Rte 140
This is another in my Lines and Tracks series from the 1980s, this taken from a post disaster scene, that piqued my later interest in recording the broken lines and structures, ephemeral atmospheric and textural effects created by such events.

Dark Angel Poster

Dark Angel Poster 1979
Another early "disaster" painting based on scenes from a fire in midtown New York City, in which I imposed the effects of smoke and stained facades against underlying irregular geometric or grid like forms.

Reworked Paintings 2

Teocalli Two: Fire and Blood   1980/2012
Teocalli Two: Fire and Blood. detail
This was originally entitled Teocalli Two, a follow up to an earlier painting, Teocalli One, based on images of Aztec temples.  In 2012, I added Fire and Blood to the imagery as well as the title.

NY 66

I recently came across several photographs of scarred walls and abandoned storefronts, many with graffiti, that I had taken in 1966 while at NYU.
Some of these, or parts of them, were incorporated into paintings and prints, others stand alone as striking images. Still more may reappear in the future!

New York: Mini Collages 1966/67

Fifty years ago in New York, in addition to painting and printmaking I created a series of (very) small collages, which until now have never seen the light of day.
Like some of my paintings of that period (see the previous recent posts) many of these collages employ graphic and text elements.
Here is a selection of these, scanned on a larger scale to reveal the detail (most are only a few inches in any dimension)
35th St Breakdown (1966)  3' x 5'

South on Third (1966) 2' x 3.7'                                 Ave A (1967) 2' x 3'

0782 (1966/7) 1' x 3'.                 TISH (1966/7)  1' x 3'.

New York 1965 - 1967. Part Three

Living as we did just off Union Square above the Village, we often crisscrossed the square, notable mainly for its low end storefronts and grungy subway station. In the sixties it was less than chic, although Andy Warhol's Factory and Max's Kansas City made their appearance there.
But its main occupant at the time was S. Klein, a fading discount emporium on the east side of the square with a garish front.  Eventually it closed and the boarded up front was a sorry sight.
I could not resist painting it.

New York 1965 - 1967. Part Two

Here are three other paintings from the sixties, all created in New York City and reflecting the cityscape of the time (before Soho and Tribeca, etc)

New York 1965 - 1967. Part One

I arrived in New York from England in 1965 to study at New York University and the Pratt Graphic Arts Institute.
Prior to my arrival I had been focusing on printmaking, but living in the city near Greenwich Village and newly exposed to the exciting and rapidly changing urban culture and art world of New York, I rented space in a communal loft studio and began painting again.
Painting for the first time on canvas and now incorporating collage using graphics, found objects and torn playbills, my work, although still structured, took on a much looser, more textured look.

I have already featured some paintings from these years on this blog, but here are three never before shown:

Revolution. 1966                                        FIVE. 1967

Jack. 1967

Prints: Deerstone

In another, smaller group of water based monotypes from 2006, entitled Deerstone, I used a similar format to the Stela series, but experimented with a cut out template that allowed for an even larger range of colors and textures within a single print—with unforeseen and often pleasing results!

Prints: Stelae

I have already posted some prints I made in connection with particular paintings.

Although in the past I have worked with traditional printmaking techniques such as lithography and etching, sometimes combining the two, between 2004 and 2006 I produced several series of monoprints using water based rather than conventional oil based inks.

This technique allowed me to recreate some of the watercolor like effects that I have used in my stained paintings for many years.   Although this method does not allow true editions to be made, it is precisely the somewhat unpredictable effects produced from one impression to another that held the greater appeal for me.

In this post I show several in the Stela series of 2006, in which I combined small woodcuts of ancient Mexican motifs within free flowing haloes of various hues.
